Private ADHD Titration
There is a current national shortage of medications to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing issues and a growing global demand.
Our service is able to offer private ADHD titration for adhd as an alternative to waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessment fees cover the cost of a single prescription.
Titration
A thorough assessment of your ADHD symptoms will be conducted by a highly experienced consultant psychiatrist. This includes a complete medical history, as well as an evaluation using the typical ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.
After your evaluation You will be advised if medication would be beneficial for your particular situation. This will be discussed during your follow-up appointment (which can be scheduled in person by video link, in person or by telephone). Your clinician will explain what is titration in adhd medication options are available and, if you decide to start on medication we will suggest titrating the dose to optimise the balance of benefits and side effects for you.
This process may take a few weeks and requires gradually altering your child's medication until the right balance is achieved. It is not unusual to need to titrate three or four medications before finding the one that is best for your child's ADHD symptoms. It's important for parents to participate in this titration process and keep a close watchful eye on their child's behavior so that they can inform the doctor if the medicine is helping or causing side effects.
If you decide to return to NHS treatment and have decided to return to NHS care, your medication will be given as a prescription from a private pharmacy that you'll have to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fee). You must keep up with your appointments every six months to monitor your medications. This includes blood pressure and pulse measurements. Annual reviews are also mandatory.
Follow-up appointments
After the assessment is complete and you are satisfied, you can schedule appointment with the psychiatrist. Typically, the appointment will take place via a zoom video call, although in certain cases it may be possible to schedule an audio-only consultation (again at an extra cost).
At this point we will discuss any treatment options and decide on a custom-made ADHD medication titration process adhd strategy. This will include an assessment of your medication dosage and a discussion around any negative side effects you may be experiencing. The cost for these titration consultations is PS150 for face-to-face sessions and PS60 for online or telephone video consultations. Medication costs are additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.
The psychiatrist will ask you questions regarding your family history, the impact of your ADHD symptoms on your daily life and any relationship problems or mental health issues that you might be experiencing. This is due to the fact that ADHD is a genetic condition and it is essential that we assess any family history that could suggest that you are at risk of developing the disorder.
It is essential to be honest and truthful with the clinician during the assessment, since the information they get will be used to determine whether your ADHD meets the diagnostic criteria. This is a crucial step, as the wrong diagnosis can lead to inappropriate medication prescription.
If you've decided you'd like to receive treatment for your ADHD We will arrange a follow up appointment with one of our psychiatrists that specialize in this field. If you want to start treatment immediately it is possible to start treatment immediately following the diagnosis. You can also take two weeks to think about the implications of the diagnosis and the options available to you.
We recommend that if you are unsure of your preferences, you talk to your GP prior to booking your private assessment. Some providers have different guidelines regarding whether or not they require an GP letter. We also recommend to confirm that your GP accepts a 'Shared Care Agreement', which means that after you have been discharged from the clinic, you will be sent back to them to get the prescription for medication.
Medication
The medication process is an essential part of the journey for many who are seeking an official ADHD diagnosis. It isn't always easy to obtain an appointment with a psychiatrist on the NHS. NHS waiting lists can be extremely long and GPs might be reluctant to refer their patients to specialist services.
One way to get around this is to ask your GP to refer you to Right to Choose (see psychiatry-uk and ADHD 360). This means that you can choose a provider that offers an assessment and titration service. This will help you to save time and also be more convenient, particularly when you are on a tight work schedule.
Once you have been identified as a candidate for this treatment, your chosen clinician will assess you and decide whether or not you need to be adjusted on your medication. You'll need to complete forms that are different for each provider however the most commonly used ones are self-reporting questionnaires and medical histories going back to childhood and adulthood. These will help your clinician determine any issues that could mean you shouldn't take ADHD medications if they're prescribed.
If you are being titrated, the medication will be a combination stimulants and non-stimulant drugs. They will be carefully tested and monitored to find the most suitable combination for you, taking into consideration any medical conditions you may have. The titration process can be long and may require a number of additional appointments before the dose becomes stable.
Based on the type of medication you are taking, follow up appointments could be scheduled monthly or quarterly. Your clinician will check that you are stable with the medication, note any side effects you've experienced, and make any needed adjustments to ensure that you remain on a safe dose. You will also be required to attend a regular health check which can include blood pressure readings, pulse and weight as well as an annual check-up.
For some individuals it could be that they are content with their medication and don't need an additional discussion regarding their titration. If you're looking to discuss your titration or treatment plan more thoroughly it is possible that you'll be sent back to the private doctor who performed your initial assessment. If this occurs, the titration appointment will be part of their consultation fee and they will be given their medication on a private prescription (see Consultation fees above). It could cost more than an NHS prescription since the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
